Nairobi, city, capital of Kenya. It is situated in the region of south-central Kenya at an elevation of approximately 5,500 feet (1 680 meters). It is situated 300 miles (480km) north of Mombasa in Kenya the port of the most important importance in the Indian Ocean.
In the 1890s the city was founded as a colonial railroad settlement. The name comes from Enkare Nairobi ("Cold Water") the Maasai water hole. The British colonial capital of Ukamba, Machakos (now Masaku) was relocated into the area in 1899. The year 1905 saw Nairobi was declared the capital of the British East Africa Protectorate. The city was transformed into a trading city in 1900 when a small Indian bazaar was opened in Nairobi.
As a governmental center, Nairobi later attracted a flood of immigrants from rural Kenya which made it one of the biggest cities in the region of tropical Africa. The city was made a municipal in 1919, and it received city status in 1954. After Kenya became independent in 1963, Nairobi remained the capital. The constitution of the country increased the area of Nairobi's municipality. The Nairobi City Council manages the larger municipality.
Nairobi is the principal industrial centre of the country. Railways are the biggest single employer in the industrial sector. The light-manufacturing industry produces beverages cigarettes, processed food items, and other products. Tourism is also an important factor. Nairobi is located close to the agricultural center of eastern Africa as well as a lot of main products travel through Nairobi before being shipped out via Mombasa. Nairobi is also playing a significant role in the community of east African states. It's the headquarters of important regional railroads, harbors and airways corporations.
